I think the biggest mindset change I've put in place is focusing on growing my business instead of simply running my business. That's an important difference - I'm looking further ahead, and I'm looking at bigger opportunities than I'd considered before.
Certainly the biggest marketing change has come from identifying my ideal customer. Not only am I focused exclusively on small business owners now (which was an easy shift), but more importantly, I've also defined my ideal clients as folks who are smart, passionate, and hardworking - traits which make me enjoy working with them, inspire me in my business, and which guarantee a good fit with the services I offer.
The results are pretty dramatic - I've doubled my client roster, and I spend far less time stressing about clients that weren't a good match for me. When it comes to business frustrations we've been there and done that.
Sixteen years ago, we started a children's museum in Oklahoma from scratch that was an incredible learning environment for children and families- but we couldn't keep it profitable.
For seven years, I (Bria) was a part-time therapist, and opened my own private practice, while we had two of our three children. I loved helping my clients move forward in their lives, yet I didn't make enough money ($30,000 was my best year).
After having our third precious child, Jaden, I transitioned from therapist to life coach. I wrote a book, The Balanced Mom - Raising Your Kids Without Losing Your Self, and got it published with New Harbinger Publishing on my first attempt. I loved coaching moms on balance and preserving their identities as they raised families (I've always been passionate about what I do, otherwise I know I'd lose interest quickly)- and yet, again, I found myself dependent on my husband's income for our lifestyle.
At the same time I started coaching, Mark was CEO of a business in New Jersey that he grew from $680,000 to $3.3 million in annual sales, and we were making plenty of money, yet his job was high-stress, too many hours, and he was often burned out and exhausted from his work. It was not a situation either of us wanted to sustain- even with the really nice income.
So, we left our New Jersey lives and moved to North Carolina for the lifestyle- to be outdoors more and vacation often, to spend lots of time with our three kids and our friends- and to run our own business and our own lives the way we want to run them.
We've never looked back and we've never been happier.
Did people think we were crazy?
Absolutely. Quite a few of them.
So, what did we do? We stopped talking to those people! And tuned into our intuition instead.
And we created the business and the lifestyle that we love.
Currently we work 30-35 hours a week as business and marketing coaches- helping entrepreneurs and small business owners like you improve your business and marketing systems so you can enjoy more freedom, more money, and more of the life you really want.
Mark enjoys passive income from an online product-based business ( www.USSignsandSafety.com ). We vacation 7 weeks a year and make enough money to live our values, save for our future, pay for three kids to attend any college of their choice, and enjoy ourselves immensely.
